How to Place an After-Hours Trade With Schwab

On Schwab.com, use the All-In-One Trade Ticket:

  1. Enter the stock symbol and select Buy or Sell.
  2. Choose a limit order.
  3. Under Timing, select Extended-hours p.m.
  4. Review and submit the order.

Schwab Mobile and thinkorswim also include extended-hours trading settings. Schwab says extended-hours orders must be assigned to the correct trading session. An order placed during regular market hours with a Day + Extended setting may continue into that day's after-hours session if it does not execute earlier.

Can You Trade Any Stock After Hours at Schwab?

Most listed securities are available, but not every stock will trade after hours. An order may not execute if there is insufficient trading interest or no matching order at your limit price.

Does Schwab Offer Overnight Trading?

Yes. Schwab offers overnight trading through thinkorswim for eligible stocks and ETFs. This service is separate from the standard 4:05 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. after-hours session.

Schwab refers to this service as extended-plus-overnight, or 24/5 trading. You can find eligible securities in the thinkorswim Public > 24 Hour Trading watchlist.

Risks of Schwab After-Hours Trading

After-hours trading can involve:

  • Lower liquidity
  • Wider bid-ask spreads
  • Greater price volatility
  • Partial fills or no execution
  • Prices that differ from those available on other trading venues

Schwab's extended-hours system matches orders only when a compatible buyer and seller are available. Unfilled orders may be canceled when the session ends.
