After-hours trading for most U.S. stocks ends at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on regular trading days. Nasdaq defines its post-market session as 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, and FINRA uses the same general definition.

The regular U.S. stock market closes at 4:00 p.m. ET. Investors can usually continue trading eligible stocks until 8:00 p.m. ET through a broker that supports extended-hours orders.
Can You Trade After 8:00 P.M.?
Yes, but availability is limited. Some brokers and alternative trading venues offer overnight trading after the standard after-hours session ends. FINRA notes that overnight trading may be available for some securities from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET.
Whether you can trade overnight depends on your broker, the stock, the order type and the trading venue.
Why After-Hours Trading May Differ by Broker
Your broker may:
- End its after-hours session before 8:00 p.m. ET.
- Offer overnight trading only for selected stocks or exchange-traded funds.
- Accept only limit orders during extended hours.
- Cancel extended-hours orders when the session ends.
- Use different hours on holidays or early-close days.
Check your broker's extended-hours schedule before placing an order. Extended-hours trading often has lower liquidity, wider bid-ask spreads and larger price swings than regular-session trading.
For most U.S. stocks, assume that after-hours trading ends at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Trading after that time is usually called overnight trading, and it is available only through participating brokers and venues.
