After-hours trading on Fidelity is placed through the regular stock and ETF trade ticket. Select an eligible brokerage account, use a limit order, and choose Day+Extended or the equivalent extended-hours setting. You usually do not need to turn on a separate account-wide setting.
Enable After-Hours Trading on Fidelity.com
- Sign in to Fidelity.com.
- Select Accounts & Trade, then choose Trade.
- Select an eligible Fidelity brokerage account.
- Enter the stock or ETF symbol.
- Choose Buy or Sell, then enter the number of shares.
- Select Limit as the order type.
- Open the Time in Force, Session, or order-details menu.
- Select Day+Extended or the equivalent Extended Hours option.
- Enter your limit price, review the order, and submit it.
Fidelity uses the same stock and ETF trade ticket for regular and extended-hours orders. The label may differ on Fidelity.com, Fidelity Trader+, or another Fidelity interface. You may also need to review and accept Fidelity's extended-hours trading agreement before placing your first order.
Enable After-Hours Trading in Fidelity Trader+
In Fidelity Trader+, place an extended-hours order through the combined trade ticket:
- Open the Trade tool.
- Enter the stock or ETF symbol.
- Open the Details filter.
- Select Day+Extended.
- Use a limit order and submit the trade.
Directed trading is a separate setting. To enable it, open Settings, choose Trade, turn on Directed Trading under General, and select Apply. You do not need directed trading enabled just to place an extended-hours order.
What Are Fidelity's After-Hours Trading Times?
Fidelity's after-hours session runs from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday when the market is open.
| Session | Fidelity hours |
|---|---|
| Regular market session | 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET |
| After-hours session | 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET |
| Premarket session | 7:00 a.m. to 9:28 a.m. ET |
What Are Fidelity's Extended-Hours Order Rules?
Fidelity accepts only limit orders during its extended-hours sessions. Market orders, stop orders, and other order types may not be available. Fidelity also does not accept good-til-canceled orders for extended-hours trading.
Other rules to keep in mind:
- You need an eligible Fidelity brokerage account.
- Only certain stocks and ETFs qualify for extended-hours trading.
- An order may receive only a partial execution.
- An unfilled after-hours order is canceled at 8:00 p.m. ET.
- To trade the security in a later session, you generally need to enter a new order.
- Account authorizations, including limited trading authorization, may restrict online extended-hours trading.
Why Is the After-Hours Option Missing?
The Day+Extended option may be missing because of the selected account, security, order type, market schedule, account permissions, or trade interface.
Check the following:
- Account: Confirm that you selected an eligible Fidelity brokerage account.
- Security: Make sure the stock or ETF supports extended-hours trading.
- Order type: Change a market order to a Limit order.
- Market schedule: Check whether the market is closed for a holiday. Extended-hours trading is generally available only on eligible market days.
- Account restrictions: Employer-sponsored accounts, authorized-user accounts, and other restricted accounts may have different trading permissions.
- Trade interface: Try the standard Accounts & Trade > Trade ticket on Fidelity.com or use Fidelity Trader+.
What Are the Risks of Trading After Hours on Fidelity?
After-hours trading usually has less liquidity, wider bid-ask spreads, and greater price volatility than regular-session trading. A limit order may not execute, may execute only partly, or may fill at a less favorable price.
Use the displayed extended-hours bid and ask prices when setting your limit price. The stock's 4:00 p.m. closing price may not be the price available after hours.
