Robinhood extended-hours trading is a way to place eligible stock and ETF orders before or after regular market hours.
You usually do not need to enable a separate account-wide setting. Start an eligible order, then choose Extended hours in the trading-hours menu.
How to Place an Extended-Hours Trade in the Robinhood App
- Open Robinhood and search for the stock or ETF.
- Open the security's detail page.
- Tap Trade, then choose Buy or Sell.
- Select Limit Order if it is not already selected.
- Enter the number of shares or dollar amount, then set your limit price.
- Tap Set trading hours or the trading-session option.
- Select Extended hours.
- Choose the time in force, such as Good for Day or Good 'til Canceled.
- Review the order and swipe up to submit it.
Robinhood's extended-hours sessions run from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. ET before the regular market opens and from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. ET after it closes.
What Order Type Does Robinhood Use for Extended Hours?
Robinhood uses limit orders for extended-hours trading. A limit order executes only at your chosen price or a better one.
Robinhood does not support market orders during extended hours. If you submit a market order outside regular market hours, Robinhood generally queues it for the next regular market session.
For some standard stock purchases, Robinhood may create a limit order with a preset limit price. Review the price and adjust it before submitting the order if needed.
Robinhood Extended-Hours Trading Times
| Trading session | Hours in Eastern Time |
|---|---|
| Pre-market | 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. |
| Regular market | 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. |
| After-hours | 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. |
| Robinhood 24 Hour Market | Available for select securities and eligible orders |
Robinhood also offers a separate 24 Hour Market for selected stocks and ETFs. Overnight trading requires an eligible security and generally uses whole-share limit orders.
How to Enable Extended-Hours Data on a Robinhood Chart
To view pre-market and after-hours prices without placing an order:
- Open a stock or ETF chart.
- Select Advanced.
- Open Settings.
- Turn on Show extended hours.
This setting changes the chart display only. It does not place an extended-hours order or activate extended-hours trading.
Why Is the Extended Hours Option Missing?
The Extended hours option may not appear when:
- The security is not eligible for extended-hours trading.
- You are placing a market, stop, or trailing-stop order.
- The security does not support fractional-share trading during extended hours.
- You are placing an overnight order for a security that is not included in Robinhood's 24 Hour Market.
- The order is being placed outside a session when Robinhood can execute it.
Robinhood says that not all securities support fractional trading during extended hours. Eligible fractional orders may also have a shorter after-hours window that ends at 7:30 p.m. ET rather than 8:00 p.m. ET.
What Are the Risks of Extended-Hours Trading?
Trading outside regular market hours can involve:
- Lower liquidity
- Wider bid-ask spreads
- Higher volatility
- Partial fills or no fill
- Prices that differ from regular-session prices
- Larger price moves after earnings releases or breaking news
A limit order controls the highest price you will pay or the lowest price you will accept when the order executes. It does not guarantee that the trade will fill.
